#SixOnSaturday 04/04/2026

2–3 minutes

Last week, I had the good fortune to be on a family holiday in Paris. This meant I spent almost a week away from my garden. A lot can change in a week. While I have enjoyed the close-up viewing SixOnSaturday brings, the time away has allowed me to look at things through a wider lens.

Here are 6 photos that show a different perspective from the usual close-ups (well, maybe not all 6). Stick around to the end, and I’ll treat you to a bonus gallery of pictures of tulips from the wonderful Jardin des Plantes.

SixOnSaturday is curated by Jim at Garden Ruminations, and you can find the participation guidelines here.

1. The view from the bottom of the decking.

This flower bed is the first one that was mine (and not left by the previous owner). It was started after I dug out a huge cotoneaster. It’s ended up being a hodgepodge of things because I didn’t really know what I was doing. The heuchera, for example, are in there because I had a load in pots that were ravaged by vine weevils. I shoved them in the ground, in the hope they’d survive.

2. Later in the year, this will be the best view in the garden with geraniums and geums soon to come through. Last year, I divided my large clump of irises, and I’m not quite sure how well they’re going to come back.

3. The colours here are a bit washed out, but my amalanchier with a slightly misplaced maple coming into leaf beneath it are the pick of what’s on offer this week. The amalanchier is a little less spectacular than usual, as I had it trimmed back last autumn.

4. The view across the decking. The decking is still collecting pots. It’s pretty haphazard at the moment, but nevertheless remains good for the soul.

5. The pick of the decking is this acer, which is more or less in full leaf now.

6. I went to our local garden centre yesterday, mostly to buy plants for my new nature pond installation featured a couple of weeks ago. I probably should have called ahead first, as they didn’t have any of their pond plants out yet.

Nevertheless, they did have tea, cake, and some impulse purchases. I’ve been thinking of trying Dahlia’s under some pressure from a good friend. I fully expect them to fail, but you never know.

The flox and the echinacea were entirely impulsive.

And finally, as promised. My pics from the Jardin des Plantes.

How lovely to get a ‘bigger picture’ view of your garden! Lots is in flower, and that flowerbed is looking wonderful.

I was also in Paris yesterday, on my way to Switzerland, and spent a little while in a local park with lots of flowers, but it wasn’t quite as spectacular as the Jardin des Plants. Looks like it was well worth a visit!

Thanks for sharing all the beauty–from your own garden and scenes from your trip! I’ve never been to France, but this seems like it would be a good time of year to visit. We will briefly step foot on French soil in August as one port visit on our Rhine River cruise will be at Strasbourg. Your Acer is stunning! And good luck with the Dahlias: I’ve had some luck with starting tubers in the past. This year, I’m starting some from seed. Fingers crossed.

I’m trying to grow dahlias for the first time this year so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for both of us 🤞

You can never have too many pots (IMHO) I love them 🙂 I have about 50ish although when I have to water in the heat of the summer it feels more like 100

I know exactly what you mean. Especially when it’s time to go on holiday and I need to ask the neighbours to fill in.

I think my friends dread looking after my plants while I’m away. Curious. Do you plant directly into containers or in a plastic pot first and then insert?

Generally, if they’re outdoor plants I put them direct into containers with drainage, as then they won’t get watterlogged if we have a long period of rain. If they’re indoor plants then all my “nice” containers are pots without holes and I put plants with plastic pots in them. I put a lot of my indoor pots outside at the height of summer, so I have to keep an eye on them if it rains.

I really enjoyed the wider lens views of your garden! I hope you have success with the dahlia’s…I didn’t think I would and was pleasantly surprised when they thrived (but we live in different parts of the world….so I’ll be interested to know how you go). The Echinacea are very pretty…enjoy your gardening week. Oh, and thanks for sharing the ‘Jardin’
