Banner for Six On Saturday over a sun drenched garden scene.

Last week, I wrote that winter had returned to the garden. This week, summer has fought back with a vengeance! You can tell from the washed-out feature photo that the sun is shining hard. Heatwave!

SixOnSaturday is curated by Jim at Garden Ruminations, and you can find the participation guidelines here.

Gardne herbs with 2 yellow hexagonal mason bee houses.

1. The most exciting addition to the garden this week is my new mason bee houses. Strictly, they’re a Father’s Day present, but I was allowed to have them early, to give the bees more time to move in.

The hexagonal shape all ties in with my favourite board game, which is definitely a bonus.

A bumble bee on a totally tangerine geum

2. Talking of bees. Here’s a bumblebee, visiting one of my totally tangerine geums.

A purple rhodedendron

3. The bees also love this purple rhododendron that’s finally coming into flower. It’s been sitting in a shady part of the decking but now it’s been moved front and centre and is a glory to behold.

4. At the other end of the garden, in the wilder bit, are some aliums. I thought they weren’t going to come through (they’re probably in too shady a position), but they’ve come good and are very cheering.

Some orange Bulley's Primrose.

5. Terrible photo of the newest section of the garden. My Bulley’s primroses have come through. Well, two of them anyway. I love these plants en masse at Wisley. I could only justify buying 3, but hopefully, over time, they’ll colonise.

  • Top down view of hosta
  • Hosta en masse.

6. A couple of shots of my hosta, taken earlier in the week, after the rain. I love how the water beads on the leaves. They’ve been relatively slug-free, which I put down to the predominantly dry days and cold evenings we’ve had this year.

That’s it for this week. See you next time, and thanks for looking at my #SixonSaturday

OK, first off, that Geum/bumblebee photo should be framed–wow! Next, what a wonderful Father’s Day gift. Lucky you! Have a great weekend and week!

Love the new bee hotels! You’ll have to post an update if you get any takers.

The primroses are also really special. I haven’t seen ones like that yet.
